Manipulation vs Adjustment: Know the Difference and Choose Your Therapy Wisely
You have started seeing a manual therapist
It could be a Chiropractor, Physio, Osteopath or maybe a remedial massage therapist
You may have heard the terms adjustment and manipulation a-lot and have no idea what is going on
So we thought we would write a quick blog to try and explain the difference
The Definition of manipulation is: "Separation (gapping) of opposing articular surfaces of a synovial joint, caused by a force applied perpendicularly to those articular surfaces, that results in cavitation within the synovial fluid of that joint."
- An articular surface is a hyaline cartilage that is wear and tear resistant low friction lubricated surface that is used for helping with weight bearing and muscle action
The mechanical response is defined as "Separation (gapping) of opposing articular surfaces of a synovial joint that results in cavitation within the synovial fluid of that joint.
- synovial fluid is known as the joint fluid, its a liquid thats between your joints - it helps with reducing friction when you move the joints.
A Chiropractic adjustment is a high velocity low amplitude thrust, an application of a specific force in a precise direction to a spinal joint that is fixated (feels blocked up)
