What are the Most Common Risk Factors for Upper Extremity Injuries in Indoor Bouldering?

Bouldering, a unique discipline of rock climbing, involves short, challenging routes without ropes or harnesses. It is distinct from other climbing activities, as it is practised indoors on artificial climbing walls and outdoors on natural boulders, and it requires strength, agility, and strategic problem-solving
Usually, there are upper extremity injuries. with a high prevalence rate of shoulder and finger injuries
While shoulder injuries in overhead sports like baseball often involve glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD), the biomechanics of bouldering differ significantly. In contrast, bouldering requires various movements of multiple muscle groups.
What areas are likely to have pain?
Shoulder pain was reported by 31.4% , making it one of the most common complaints, second only to hand pain at 37.1%. Conversely, spine and ankle/foot pain were less prevalent, each reported by 5.7%
Shoulder apprehension sensation usually requires 2 weeks of recovery
Lateral epicondylitis is common with nearly 1 in 5 climbers having the condition
Hand injuries, such as pulley injuries, occur due to an increased strain on finger tendons in bouldering, where repetitive gripping and dynamic moves can elevate the risk of tendon damage.
