"The Impact of a Sedentary Lifestyle on Your Back Health: Recognising the Risks and Finding Relief"
Research released in 2024 looked into University students and their lifestyle habits, and whether it caused upper and lower back pain
Adults sit for an average of 8 hours a day and are active for around 4 hours a day.
The lack of physical activity and predominance of a seated posture among the students leads to the overloading of the same joint structures and muscle groups.
The main causes of muscle imblanaces are
hypokinesis
chronic loading above the limit set by muscle quality
asymmetric loading without sufficient compensation
changes to mobility stereotype
abnormal posture places strain on the ligaments and muscles, which can indirectly influence spinal curvature
Sitting for just 1 hour leads to INCREASED spinal stiffness
Thoracic (your upper to mid back) movement is reduced in people who spend over 7 hours a day sitting and is worse if you do under 150 minutes a week of physical activity
Sitting can cause a REDUCTION in lumbar lordosis ( Low back curve )
when we sit, the knees and hips are flexed, the pelvis rotates backward and the lumbar curve flattens. the low back intradiscal pressure can INCREASE and contribute to lower back pain
The research concluded
lack of exercise leads to joint contracture , joint narrowing and muscle stiffness
exercise improves posture
there are DIFFERENCES in posture in women and men, with women most likely to have lower back pain and shoulder pain more likely in men.
This is why its important to reduce spinal deviations in young adults with Chiropractic care and postural assessments.
Always try to aim for less than 6 hours of sitting a day!
