Can Heat Therapy With Stretching Help You Move More Freely?

The application of HEAT to muscles is commonly used to increase our patient's ability to stretch better and longer
Stretching aims to gain, maintain, and restore muscle flexibility in symptomatic or asymptomatic populations
The goal of stretching includes
- maximising sports performance
- preventing injury
- minimising age-related loss of flexibility
- recovering range of motion following injury or lack of movement
- muscle soreness relief
Although the research isn't consistent on the effects of stretching, researchers looked into the application of heat on a stretch to see what happens
Potential mechanisms to which heat COULD enhance the results of stretching are
- increased tissue temperature
- increased blood flow
- reduced muscle activity
- affecting type 1 collagen (which provides the main passive resistance component in muscle tissue, which becomes more extensive with an increase in temperature.
The researchers concluded
- Heat can provide an influence on the acute gain of range of motion (less than 12-week old injury)
- a sustained gain of range of motion with more treatments in healthy people.
