The Surprising Link Between Jaw Alignment and Your Posture

The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) provides essential activities like chewing and speaking and is one of the most used joints in the body.

The motion of the TMJ is controlled by several muscles like

- Masseter

- Temporalis

- Internal Pterygoid

- External Pterygoid

- and the Digastric muscle

Symptoms of Jaw problems are

- Joint sounds (clicks and crepitus)

- muscle soreness

- restrictions or deviations when the mouth opens

The jaw has connections with the cervical (neck) area, which lead to the idea that if the neck is out of alignment, then that can lead to jaw problems.

The results of a 2023 study found that there IS a correlation between posture and Jaw problems. Nerve pathways regulate body posture and mandibular posture. (mandibular in your jaw)

The study found that an overly forward head position is accompanied by shortening of the anterior neck muscle and the posterior extensor neck muscles. This can alter the center of gravity leading to deviations in jaw alignment
