Research from May 2023 looked into low back pain in students, in particular medical students.

Low back pain will affect 80% of adults at some point in their lives. It has been for a long time one of the biggest muscle disorders in the world.

Low back pain is the LEADING cause of disability worldwide, leading to

- decrease in quality of life

- becoming less productive

- limitations of mental fitness

- days away from education and work to deal with the pain and limitations of function

When the study sampled the 300 students, 94% had low back pain with 90% of them having low back pain not related to trauma.

The main causes/risk factors reported by the students where

- Long sitting ( remember from other blog posts, we are not meant to sit for longer than 6 hours a day

- Stress

- Wrong Sleep position ( Remember, one pillow, and only side or back sleeping is preferred)

- Physical inactivity

- Anxiety

The two most common methods to reduce pain?

- Sleep in better positions

- work on posture!

Other problems experienced by those with low back pain where

- Neck Pain is the most common

- Low Mood

- difficulty at work

- weakness

Did weight matter?

Low back pain was LOWER in underweight students compared to those who were overweight and obese

No difference in the prevalence of low back pain was seen in different genders, the grades of students, or the number of years studied.
