RISK FACTORS for migraines are
- being female
- having a high amount of initial attacks
- Stressful life events
- low educational status
- obesity
- ineffective acute treatments
- snoring
- overuse of acute migraine medications
Chronic Migraines can IMPACT your social life, physical and occupational functions and lead to a reduced quality of life
What the research says- (Based on 2023 Studies)
Receving manual thearpy in conjunction with medication was shown to improve Quality of Life and there was a decrease in intensity of pain and migraines per month
Hydrotherapy combined with medication was also shown to improve intensity and frequency of Migraines
Exercise- This is a tricky one, as exercsie can often make Migraines WORSE, however, exercise can increase Beta-endorphin levels with is known for its analgesic properties and can actually be decreased in a migraine attack. Doing exercise can have long term benefits and reduce intensity and frequency of migraines .
So what happens during a migraine attack ?
During migraine attacks, neurogenic inflammation triggers the release of cytokines, which in turn stimulates the trigeminovascular system and activates neural pathways. These cytokines may contribute to central sensitisation and the development of chronic pain by inducing neuroinflammation
What does manual therapy do ?
Manual therapy leads to vasodilation, increased blood flow, and muscle relaxation, thereby decreasing pain perception and promoting tissue relaxation
How long does Manual therapy take ?
manual therapy interventions applied for 6–24 weeks, along with amitriptyline treatment combined with aerobic exercise for 12 weeks, significantly reduced the number of headache days per month in chronic migraine patients
