Can Hip Joint Mobilizations Improve Pain and Function in Knee Osteoarthritis?
Knee osteoarthritis affects nearly a quarter of a billion people worldwide.
Knee osteoarthritis often affects the hip joint muscles, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteus medius muscles becoming weak.
Studies have shown that strengthening the hip abductors MAY help in stabilising the hip joint
Symptomatic osteoarthritis affects 13% of elderly women and 10% of elderly men
One of the significant risk factors for osteoarthritis is OBESITY
But research wanted to look into mobilising the hip joint to help with the knee osteoarthritis
The theory is that joint mobilisation can be effective in decreasing the load and increasing the mobility of the hip and knee joint
The research in 2023 concluded
-Addition of hip mobilisations and hip strength training exercises was found to be far more effective in improving pain, increasing dynamic balance, and improving the physical function of knee osteoarthritis patients compared to the conventional knee exercises alone.
The study performed 18 treatment sessions with 5 sessions per week over a 3-week period. With another 3 sessions in week 4.
Each session lasted 30 to 40 minutes
