Does Spinal Manipulative Therapy Affect the Need for Lumbar Spine Reoperation After Discectomy?
1st let's discuss what a lumbar discectomy is:
this is a surgical procedure to remove a herniated intervertebral disc material to alleviate refractory lower extremity pain, numbness or weakness
Re-operation occurs for 6-12% of people
20% of lumbar discectomy patients have continued symptoms one year after surgery
Spinal manipulative therapy is a potential treatment for those with ongoing symptoms after spine surgery.
Research released in 2024 found that patients who received chiropractic care are LESS LIKELY to undergo lumbar spine reoperation compared to those who did receive chiropractic care
Research also shows that patients receiving chiropractic care for a new diagnosis of lumbar spine problems are less likely to undergo discectomy
The study didnt look at the cost comparisons of lumbar surgery vs Chiropractic care, but noted that in the USA the surgery costs approximately $13750 ( $21 000 AUD) vs our Chiropractic fee of $57
