Sports injuries have a significant economic and psychological impact

The incidence of injury in athletes varies

- injury time (72% during sporting competition and 22% in training)

- type of competition ( higher in outdoor than in indoor championships)

- gender ( males more than females)

The most common injuries are muscle injuries and bone injuries like stress fractures and tendinopathy - mainly in high jerk sports

PROLONGED injury leads to a decrease in muscle mass, muscle strength and function, leading to increased abdominal fat deposition and may DELAY in returning to competition

How different nutrients help with sport rehabilitation

Vitamin A

- acute wounds

- healing of fractures

- counteraction of corticosteroid impact on wound healing

Vitamin C

- collagen formation

- improved muscle strength after surgery

Vitamin C

- Collagen production

- Thickened cartilage

- decrease joint pain

Vitamin E

- decreased inflammation

- improved limb function

Vitamin D

- bone formation and healing

- increased upper and lower limb strength

improvements in atrophy

Creatine

- decrease muscle mass loss and decreased strength loss after immobilsation

- increase muscle growth and strength After immobility and during rehabilitation

- protective effect on muscle oxidative damage

Its also recommended athletes have adequate intake of minerals like Magnesium, iron and Selenium for muscle contraction, oxygen transport and antioxidant capacity

Curcumin

studies have shown that cur cumin reduced symptoms of inflammation and pain, with similar outcomes to ibuprofen and sodium diclofenac
