Research released in July 2023 looked into the role of the scapular and how it can affect motion and neck pain

What is the scapular?

The scapular is an important bone in your shoulder-upper back that plays an important role in protecting the shoulder joint

Many muscles stabilise the scapular, including-

Serratus anterior - medial border of the scapula and the inferior angle of the scapula can be painful if the muscle is tight, press and pull activities are usually limited. Upper-body martial arts are also difficult with dysfunctional serratus anterior

Rhomboid Major - unable to retract the shoulder - Rowing, pulling, throwing, and push-ups, are usually difficult when the rhomboid is tight/weak.

Rhomboid Minor

Levator Scapulae - Dysfunction can lead to problems with swimming, throwing, and tennis.

Trapezius - Tightness and dysfunction can lead to a reduction in head movements and neck movement

Now back to the research, with my other blog stating nearly half of neck pain patients have scapular distortions, it is no surprise that the researchers founds a POSITIVE result when patients had there scapular repositioned.

They found there was

- improved motion

- less neck pain

- less upper back and shoulder pain

Exercises that can help the shoulder are:

- Scapular pinches

- Robbery pinches dynamic hugs

- cheerleader exercise

- seated rows

- high rows

- lat pull downs
